Jeff Garvin is an Orange County native whose unique performing arts background makes him a perfect candidate to teach our new Youth Rock Performance Ensemble Class. As a youngster, Jeff avoided piano practice like the plague for 3 solid years, using the time to develop a keen ear with which to fool his instructors. It didn't work for long. 4 years of formal choral music instruction ensued, ranging from opera to pop and everything between, until Garvin was saved by the guitar and began writing and performing songs. Private vocal and guitar lessons followed, and Garvin soon formed his first rock band.
Between local shows as a rock frontman, Garvin was studying acting (LACHSA, Cameron Thor Studio) and appearing in numerous feature films and network sitcoms (The Wonder Years, Sister Sister, Roseanne, Caroline in the City, among others.) After graduating from Brea-Olinda High School (where he was voted Most Talented Senior), he went on to study classical guitar with Jeff Cogan at Chapman University, where he earned a BFA in, naturally, Film Production. After winning both the Guitar Award and the Visual Storytelling Award, Garvin graduated Cum Laude with Departmental Honors.
In combination with his background in vocal and guitar music, Garvin's experience as an actor and filmmaker give him the skills and insight to help young performers develop superior showmanship while honing their musicianship.
Garvin currently tours and records with his alternative rock act, 7k (www.myspace.com/7k), and is pleased to be using his performance & musical chops to inspire the next generation of musicians! Look for his shock of black & blond hair roaming the halls at Premier this summer!
